Emotional Intelligence is About Self — Build Your Roadmap

Exercising emotional intelligence is the foundation of any successful leadership journey.

Leaders, especially mid-level managers and project managers must practice effective emotional intelligence. Successful businesses, teams, and government organizations require leaders who are aware of their emotions.

Emotional intelligence is about self-control, self-awareness, and self-reflection. Notice the common trend: it’s about self.

Leadership requires reaction to problems and people. Yet, we seldom have control over events.

We can never be sure how others will behave.

“Don’t see for everything to happen as you wish it would, but rather wish that everything happens as it actually will — then your life will flow well.”

— Epictetus, Enchiridion, 8

Epictetus teaches us to accept what has happened versus what we wish would happen.

He is speaking about our emotional intelligence. How we choose to react is key. That is leadership. That is what our employees, team members, and our bosses are watching.
